Lake Tahoe Information

Lake of the Sky

• Lake Tahoe's incredible beauty and terrain is the product of several thousand years of glaciers and ice ages. Nowadays, most of the snow melts in the summer months, yet sometimes mountain caps bear snow year-round. Split down the middle by the borders of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is roughly 12 miles wide and 22 miles long.

• It is also North America's largest alpine lake with an average depth of over 1000 feet.

• Comprised of a variety of public and private land, the Lake Tahoe Basin encompasses five counties, four National Forests, and several federal classified wilderness areas.

• Awe inspiring mountain peaks ring the lake and rise dramatically from 6200 feet in elevation at the lake's surface to over 10,000 feet above sea level.

Long the summer home of the Washoe tribe, Kit Carson and the Fremont Party first set foot in the Tahoe Basin in the mid-1800's. Development and exploration of the area began in earnest with the discovery of silver to the east in Virginia City, Nevada in 1859. Virginia City's boom led to the clearing of the majority of the forests around Lake Tahoe for use in the countless mines being constructed. Thus, most of the pines and firs we see around the lake today are less than 150 years old.

As the silver industry waned, the next stage of Tahoe's history centered around the emergence of elegant resorts along the Lake's edge. The days of "Old Tahoe" in the 20's and 30's were filled with the well-to-do from San Francisco spending their summers and weekends sailing the waters of Lake Tahoe in their wooden boats and relaxing at places like the Thunderbird Lodge on the Lake's east shore. It was in this era that people first began coming to Historic Camp Richardson. The resort has since evolved into the Lake's #1 year round recreation resort.
